How to Choose the Right Kids Bike: The Size-First Method
Most parents start with age. That’s the first mistake. Age is a rough guide, not a rule. Your child’s inseam measurement is what actually determines the right fit, and fit determines whether they ride confidently or give up after one session.
The rule is simple: seat your child on the bike and check that both feet rest flat on the ground. That flat-footed position lets kids stop reliably, balance without panic, and build real riding confidence from day one.
A bike that’s too tall forces tiptoe riding. Tiptoe riders bail faster, fall more, and lose confidence quickly. A bike that’s too small gets outgrown in a single season. Get the size right the first time.
Inseam-to-wheel size guide:
- 30–46 cm inseam → 12″ wheel — ideal toddler bikes, ages 2–4
- 40–58 cm inseam → 14″ wheel — ages 3–6
- 48–68 cm inseam → 18″ wheel — ages 5–8
- 50–60 cm inseam → 20″ wheel — ages 6–9
- 62–84 cm inseam → 24″ wheel — ages 9–13+
Still unsure? Use our kids bike size guide — measure inseam in under two minutes and find the right wheel size instantly.
Weight matters as much as size.
A kid’s bike should weigh no more than 40% of your child’s body weight. For a 15 kg three-year-old, maximum bike weight is 6 kg. Heavier bikes are harder to steer, harder to pick up after a fall, and significantly harder to ride uphill. The Kidvelo Rookie 12 balance bike weighs 3.2 kg and uses a lightweight aluminium alloy frame — well within that 40% threshold for most toddlers. Lighter bikes build confidence. Heavy bikes build frustration.
The four types of kids bikes — and which one your child actually needs
| Bike type | Best age | Terrain | Key feature | Starts from |
| Balance bike | 18 months – 5 yrs | Footpath, backyard | Teaches balance first, no pedals | $199.95 (Kidvelo Rookie 12) |
| Tricycle | 2 – 4 yrs | Flat surfaces | 3-wheel stability, easiest start | See range |
| Kids mountain bike | 5 – 13+ yrs | Trails, gravel, parks | Knobby tyres, disc or v-brakes | See range |
| Kids road bike | 6 – 13+ yrs | Road, bike paths | Lightweight alloy, speed focus | See range |
Balance bikes – the smartest starting point for toddlers
Balance bikes skip training wheels entirely. No pedals. Kids propel with their feet, developing real balance and coordination from the start. Children who begin on balance bikes transfer to a pedal bike significantly faster than those who start on training wheels, a finding supported by occupational therapy research into early childhood motor skill development.
Our balance bike range covers 12″ to 24″, including convertible models that add pedals as your child grows.
Tricycles – stability first for the very youngest riders
Not every toddler is ready for two wheels. Tricycles give the youngest riders (and kids with balance challenges) a stable, low-risk entry point. Three wheels mean they focus on steering and pedalling confidence rather than balance.

Kids mountain bikes – for the adventurous ones
Got a child who wants to hit trails, tackle gravel paths, or go harder than the local park allows? Kids mountain bikes are built for it. Prioritise knobby tyres, reliable v-brakes or mechanical disc brakes, and a lightweight alloy frame. Front suspension is useful for trail riding. Skip bikes with complex rear derailleurs at this age, they create maintenance headaches without meaningful performance gains for young riders.

Kids road bikes – speed and purpose for older riders
Sporty kids who want to ride further and faster will love a road-geometry bike. Lightweight aluminium frames, narrower tyres, and flat or drop handlebars make these ideal for school commutes, longer rides, and building genuine cycling fitness. These are entry-level performance machines built for riders who take cycling seriously.

Australian safety standards, helmets, and what the law requires
Australia enforces mandatory safety standards for children’s bicycles through the ACCC. These cover reflector placement, braking performance, and frame structural integrity. Every bike in our range is sourced from compliant suppliers. Buying from a registered Australian retailer protects your child and confirms these requirements are met, imported bikes through unverified overseas marketplaces may fail these standards entirely.
See the full ACCC mandatory bicycle safety standards — the official compliance requirements for bicycles sold in Australia.
A correctly fitted helmet is legally required in every Australian state and territory. It should sit level, two finger-widths above the eyebrows, with a snug chin strap. For beginners, knee and elbow pads are strongly recommended. The Triple 8 Dry Erase Protective Gear Set is our most popular starter pack for new riders.
For age-specific safety guidance, Raising Children Network provides current, evidence-based advice for Australian families.
Complete the setup with kids bike accessories, helmets, protective pads, gloves, pumps, and locks.
Frequently Asked Questions of Kids Bikes
Size is based on wheel diameter and child's height/age:
- 12-inch: Ages 2–4 (approx. 85–100cm).
- 16-inch: Ages 4–6 (approx. 100–115cm).
- 20-inch: Ages 5–8 (approx. 110–130cm).
- 24-inch: Ages 7–11 (approx. 125–145cm).
- Pro Tip: Smaller is often better for control than a bike that is too big.
Balance bikes (no pedals) are recommended for ages 1.5–3 to teach balance naturally. Training wheels are for kids 2+ who need support, but learning to balance is faster without them.
A lighter alloy frame is easier for children to handle, control, and pedal. A good rule is that the bike should weigh less than 40% of the child’s body weight.
Younger riders (under 6) often use coaster brakes (pedal backward to stop) for simplicity. Older kids (6+) should use hand brakes to build proper cycling skills, provided they can reach the levers.
Look for an alloy frame, child-specific brake levers (easy to reach), and a chain guard for safety.
While budget-friendly, department store bikes can be heavy and less durable. Quality bikes from bike shops are often lighter and easier to repair.
Gears are usually introduced on 20-inch and 24-inch bikes as children develop better coordination.
The child should be able to sit on the saddle and touch the ground with the balls of both feet, with 2–3 cm of clearance over the top tube.
