How to Choose the Right Adult Bike Helmet
Get your size right first
Wrap a flexible tape measure around your head approximately 3 cm above your eyebrows. That number, in centimetres, determines your size bracket. Most adult helmets cover 54–61 cm, but sizing varies between brands. Check the size guide on each product listing.
Once the helmet is on, it should sit level, two finger-widths above your eyebrows. Use the retention dial to close the cradle snugly, no gaps, no pressure points. Buckle the chin strap and push the helmet front-to-back. It should move less than 2.5 cm. If it rocks further, readjust or resize.
Match the helmet to your riding
- Road and commuting: Lightweight (200–300 g), aerodynamic, and well-ventilated. Designed for speed, distance, and all-day wearability. Minimal rear coverage, these are not the right call for technical trail riding.
- Mountain biking: Extended rear skull coverage, a visor for sun and debris, and a more substantial shell. Trail helmets typically run 300–450 g. Worth the extra weight if you’re on technical terrain.
- Casual and family rides: Entry-level helmets meet the same mandatory standard as performance lids. What you’re paying more for above the entry level is better ventilation, lighter weight, and a more precise retention system, not fundamentally better protection on a casual ride.
Helmet Care and When to Replace
Clean with mild soap and warm water only, solvents degrade EPS foam without any visible sign. Store away from direct sun and heat; Australian summer temperatures inside a closed car can accelerate foam breakdown.
Replace your helmet immediately after any significant impact, even with no visible damage. EPS foam compresses on impact and does not recover. For helmets not involved in a crash, most manufacturers recommend replacement every 3–5 years. Australian UV and heat make annual condition checks worthwhile.
Never buy a second-hand helmet. You cannot verify its impact history.

What Australian parents need to know before they buy
Helmet laws and fines by state
Helmet use is mandatory for all cyclists in every Australian state and territory, including toddlers on balance bikes. There are no age exemptions. Fines for riding without an approved helmet vary by state:
| State / Territory | Helmet Fine (approx.) |
| NSW | $344 |
| VIC | ~$227 |
| QLD | ~$143 |
| SA | ~$205 (inc. victims levy) |
| TAS | $344 |
| WA | $50 |
| ACT | ~$121–$146 |
| NT | $25 |
Fine amounts are indexed and may increase. Verify current amounts with your state transport authority.
The helmet must comply with Australia’s mandatory standard. From 22 September 2025, all helmets sold in Australia must meet the Consumer Goods (Bicycle Helmets) Safety Standard 2024. Compliant helmets carry a certification sticker inside the shell, check for it before purchasing.

Measure 3 cm above your eyebrows. Most adult helmets fit 54–61 cm but sizing varies by brand, always check the product size guide. Once on, the helmet should sit level two finger-widths above your eyebrows, with the retention dial snug and less than 2.5 cm of movement in any direction when the chin strap is fastened.
The Consumer Goods (Bicycle Helmets) Safety Standard 2024, fully enforced from 22 September 2025, requires compliance with one of six standards: AS/NZS 2063:2020, AS/NZS 2063:2008, EN 1078:2012+A1:2012, US CPSC 16 C.F.R. Part 1203, ASTM F1447-18, or Snell B-95. The certification label is printed inside the helmet. Every helmet in this collection is compliant.
Yes. All states and territories require helmet use on public roads and shared paths. No adult exemptions exist. Fines range from $25 in the NT to $344 in NSW and Tasmania. Exemptions apply only for approved religious headdress in all states and medical reasons in some jurisdictions.
Most manufacturers recommend replacement every 3–5 years under regular use. Replace immediately after any significant impact — EPS foam compresses on impact and cannot recover, even with no visible damage. Australian UV and heat accelerate degradation. Annual condition checks are worthwhile. Never buy a second-hand helmet.
